The European Copyright Society (ECS) (la Société européenne du droit d’auteur) was founded in 2012 with the aim of creating a platform for critical and independent scholarly thinking on European Copyright Law and Policy. Its members are scholars and academics from various countries of Europe, seeking to articulate and promote their views of the overall public interest on all topics in the field of authors rights, neighbouring rights and related matters. In 2025, ECS is chaired by CREATe’s Director Professor Martin Kretschmer.
This year’s event is a working conference, with four panels preparing future Opinions by the ECS. Two open discussions will reflect topical issues relating to the UK’s relationship with EU law and the evolving governance of copyright in the context of AI. The ECS conference also coincides with the 2025 CREATe Spring School: (re)Humanising Creativity, taking place 15-20 May, which will give the opportunity for interactions, conversations, and potential collaborations between our ECS guests, speakers, early career researchers, CREATe and School of Law colleagues, and Spring School participants.
The event is hosted with the support of the AHRC, in the Advanced Research Centre of the University of Glasgow. The conference will be open to the public and free to attend, but please keep in mind that spaces are limited. The event is likely to be oversubscribed. To express your interest in attending, please complete the application form on the conference website, indicating in a few sentences why you would like to join. We will confirm places in two rounds, at the end of February and end of March.
