Publishers, news agencies and journalists write to Macron and Merkel on necessity of press publishers’ right

31 January 2019

A coalition of publishers, news agencies and journalists (including News Media Coalition, News Media Europe, and the European Federation of Journalists) have written to French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, requesting “urgent action” on the proposed Copyright Directive. The letter claims that the introduction of a new press publishers’ right is “key to the future of professional journalism and a sustainable, free, independent, democracy-enhancing press”, and calls for a workable solution to the Franco-German stand-off.
