Vice-President Ansip defends Commission’s copyright position on his blog

Andrus Ansip, the Vice-President of the European Commission, has provided their opinion on copyright reform in light of the rejection of the Copyright Directive at the plenary vote of the European Parliament. In a blogpost published on the European Commission website, Ansip  reiterates that the proposed reform should return to something analogous to the initial proposal submitted by the European Commission. In their opinion, Ansip highlights three main areas of priority: (a) avoiding broad filtering requirements, (b) maintaining freedom of expression, and (c) ensuring no introduction of a general monitoring obligation. Furthermore, the blogpost highlights other pressing copyright issues which should be taken into account by the reform, including educational exceptions, text and data mining provisions, and digital preservation of heritage materials.
