Study published on copyright licences for educational establishments

March 2018

A new study has been published by Teresa Nobre entitled “Educational Licences in Europe” (available in report and handout form here). The provisions under article 4 of the proposed Copyright Directive would permit the new educational use exception to be overridden by licensing terms, provided they are easily available. Following an analysis of 10 licensing agreements across Europe, the study finds that the terms in these licences are not desirable, placing undue burdens on educational establishments, and further restricting educational uses.
