Italian Wikipedia “blacked out” in protest against Copyright Directive

3 July 2018

The Italian Wikipedia has blacked out in protest against the adoption of the Copyright Directive. Attempts to access the website are met with a statement which details the proposed reforms, and calls upon MEPs to reject the Directive at the plenary vote of 5 July. The statement claims that the Directive “threatens online freedom and creates barriers to accessing the Net”, and that “Wikipedia itself risks closure [should the Directive be implemented]”. Later, the Spanish and Polish Wikipedias also joined in a similar protest.
