European research orgs. call for mandatory TDM exception

Several European research and innovation organisations (including Communia, Liber, and Allied for Startups) have signed a letter to EU legislators calling for a mandatory exception for text and data mining (TDM) under article 3a of the proposed Copyright Directive. As the current wording stands, the new TDM exception is limited to research organisations only (not including e.g. corporate businesses, hobbyists, independent researchers etc.). This, the letter highights, has the capacity to stifle the use of TDM which could be used to bolster Europe’s AI innovation in the current global race.
