European Alliance of News Agencies issue joint statement in support of press publishers’ right

4 September 2018

CEO’s of 18 European news agencies have released a joint statement in support of the press publishers’ right, ahead of the European Parliament vote scheduled for 12 September. The statement claims that oppositions by platforms such as Facebook and Google are based on “complete fabrication”, stating that they “[plunder] press publishers’ content”. Signatories urge the European Parliament to support the reform, which they claim will address the “grotesque imbalance” between internet platforms and news agencies.

The joint statement follows a more general statement on the Copyright Directive issued in 2017 (see “EANA Board statement on copyright”).
