Data protection expert details concerns over Copyright Directive

The European Data Protection Supervisor, Giovanni Buttarelli, has issued comments regarding the Copyright Directive. Their response details how the introduction of further monitoring obligations may “exaccerbate” the already “endemic monitoring” of internet users. Whilst they conclude that the terms of article 13 are not tantamount to a general monitoring obligation, they do raise concerns that lack of clarity of wording may result in “a paradoxical, even quixotic, obligation” which is impossible to imlpement in practice.
