Invitation to CREATe AHRC Relaunch, 11 March 2024

By 16 February 2024March 8th, 2024No Comments

We are delighted to welcome you to the CREATe AHRC Relaunch Event on Monday 11 March 2024.

The CREATe Centre at the University of Glasgow has received a major five-year research infrastructure award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), enabling us to develop capacity, policy resources and legal guidance with a focus on the Creative Economy. We will celebrate the Relaunch of CREATe as ‘Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy’ on 11 March. We would be delighted to see you there.

On Monday 11 March 2024, from 15:30 – 20:00, we are relaunching the Centre, with an exhibition of current work in the Advanced Research Centre (ARC), a speech by the Principal of Glasgow University, Sir Anton Muscatelli and a keynote and conversation with Professor Anu Bradford (Henry L. Moses Professor of Law and International Organization at Columbia University) about her recent book: Digital Empires: The Global Battle to Regulate Technology (speaker joining us via Zoom).

Places for the launch events on 11 March may be booked here:

REGISTRATION

Earlier in the day, there will be a roundtable with the UK’s digital regulators (invitation only, Chatham House rule) exploring –

  • The formal and informal coordination of responsibilities between regulators, for example for mergers, algorithmic targeting, AI;
  • Geopolitical positioning and the UK’s “freedom to operate”;
  • New modes of regulation, such as codes of conduct/practice.

On Tuesday morning, 12 March, CREATe will explore its future research agenda in a more informal setting. A working lunch will be introduced by CREATe’s directorate, Prof. Martin Kretschmer, Prof. Philip Schlesinger (Deputy Director 2012-2024), Dr Magali Eben and Prof. Kris Erickson. If you would like to join us on 12 March, please email CREATe at contact@create.ac.uk.

With the Online Safety Act, the Digital Competition and Consumer Bill, the reform of the Data rights regime and the potential regulation of AI (safety, copyright) there is a wave of regulatory activity that comes with new concepts and reasoning. In an international context, the EU’s agenda (DSA, DMA, Data Act, AI Act) is a potential foil, with market access implications. This is coming at a moment when innovation appears to be outpacing regulation and new technologies are having profound impacts for users, innovators, and society. We are interested to hear from stakeholders, research institutes, scholars, colleagues and friends about topics that are most important to you. There are some funds available to support travel if funding cannot be obtained from other sources.
