Cultural Diplomacy 2.0 in Question

By 5 December 2018No Comments

Professor Philip Schlesinger, Deputy Director of CREATe, spoke about new intermediaries and platform regulation at the European University Institute’s executive training seminar on how cultural diplomacy is presently being reshaped in the digital age. The event was held on 28-30 November 2018 in Florence.

Professor Schlesinger’s presentation covered how creative industries are related to cultural diplomacy, the EU’s and key member states’ cultural and creative industry policies, trends in global cultural intermediation and consequent dilemmas for regulatory bodies. He concluded by outlining the profound challenges posed to public service broadcasting by global competition, where the domestic base is key to international soft power projection.

Participants came from Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Italy, Liberia, Madagascar, Palestine, Turkey, the UK and the USA, bringing diverse perspectives from the global south in particular to the discussion.
