An exciting new copyright education conference is taking place at the University of Liverpool on 3rd April 2018, with sponsorship from CREATe. Icepops is the International Copyright-Literacy Event with Playful Opportunities for Practitioners and Scholars.
The call for contributions is open until Monday 8th January and booking for the event is now available. CREATe are delighted to be sponsoring this event and we encourage colleagues to consider submitting an idea to present at the conference. The organisers are looking for lightning talks, world café style pitches, ideas for new games, posters and are also open to other creative approaches to copyright education – interpretative dance anyone? The keynote speakers will be Professor Ronan Deazley from Queen’s University Belfast and Alex Moseley from the University of Leicester.
The event is being organised by Chris Morrison and Jane Secker (the team behind the Copyright Literacy website) and the CILIP Information Literacy Group. Chris and Jane were inspired to host this event after attending a one-day conference on Models for Copyright Education in Information Literacy Programs, which was part of the IFLA Conference in Wroclaw Poland in August 2017. The event brought together copyright specialists, librarians and teachers from around the world to talk about their approaches to copyright education.
Chris and Jane have been undertaking research in the UK and developing creative approaches to copyright education for a number of years. Much of their work was inspired by carrying out a survey into levels of copyright literacy amongst librarians and those working in the cultural heritage sector back in 2014. The findings, published in the Library and Information Research, led them to carry out a follow-up study to gather qualitative research into librarians’ experiences of copyright in their professional lives.
At the same time they have developed several games-based learning resources to help teach librarians and others about copyright including Copyright the Card Game and the Publishing Trap. There will be an opportunity to play the Publishing Trap at Icepops.
