CREATe is co-supporting an interactive workshop organized by the Digital Catapult that aims to generate points of discussion and provide reliable guidance about the rules governing the production, exploitation and consumption of music in the digital age. It will also be an opportunity for the organisers to better understand what songwriters and composers specifically need to know about copyright.

Understanding UK Copyright Law: An Interactive Workshop for Music Writers and Composers/ London / March 19 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Copyright gives songwriters and composers the right to control the use of their work and the ability to earn from it. In order to have their efforts rewarded, creators need to know how to protect their work, how to license and exploit it, and how to legally re-use the work of others. Only by understanding and using their rights will creators, both professionals and amateurs, be able to produce exploitable materials and to control the use of their work. In other words, they need to understand the mechanisms of copyright and have the tools to find their way through these complex mechanisms.

Throughout history, the music industry has adapted its products and strategies to successive technological and legislative changes, especially to copyright law. Today, digital technologies and the internet present new opportunities as well as challenges for anyone who creates music and aims to make a living out of it. On the one hand, it allows music writers and composers to enable their work to be easily consumed and re-used through digital platforms and develop new business models; on the other hand, it can lead to the widespread unauthorised use of their music. In this context, it becomes increasingly important to be guided by accurate and accessible copyright information as opposed to myths and anecdotes.

This event is part of a series of workshops entitled ‘Understanding UK Copyright Law’, aimed at providing guidance about copyright to different sectoral groups of the creative industries. ‘Understanding UK Copyright Law’ is a joint initiative of the Digital Catapult, CREATe (University of Glasgow), CopyrightUser.org, and the Copyright Hub.
